SwanCare has taken out the best seniors/aged persons multi-unit development at the annual Master Builders Association of Western Australia awards for innovative features built into Akora Apartments.

The features included the internal communal spaces, commitment to energy efficiency, building adaptability, a rooftop terrace, generous living spaces, an engaging piazza and a ground floor café.

Located amidst landscaped gardens at Adie Court in SwanCare’s Bentley Park community, Akora encompasses 44 stylish architect-designed apartments, which include a contemporary light, bright scheme, a private residence lounge, green room, level four terrace and a cafe for the enjoyment of residents and locals.

“Akora has been built to Universal Design Standards, which means the apartments can easily adapt and respond as residents’ needs change, a feature which will enable people to age ‘in place’ and receive in-home care when they feel they need it,” SwanCare Group Chief Executive Officer, Graham Francis, said.

“For us, it’s about offering retirees or people moving towards retirement better options to lead the lifestyle they choose, but with easy access to care when it’s needed.”

Core design features integrated into each apartment include high ceilings, water efficient fixtures and fittings and LED lighting, motion sensors in common areas and spacious balconies, many with views.

An easy to use electricity monitoring package in each apartment enables residents to monitor their electricity consumption and identify opportunities to save power and money, while an electric heat pump system reduces both running costs and greenhouse gas emissions associated with the delivery of hot water.

A rooftop solar photovoltaic system also further reduces the energy consumption and running costs of the entire building.

Further features of Akora – the aboriginal name for ‘dwelling’ – include a mezzanine area and high quality insulation to ensure a quiet home environment.

The SwanCare community features a range of onsite amenities including an op shop, medical centre, hair and beauty salon, auditorium, social centre, sporting facilities, a library and a supermarket.

SwanCare will soon commence construction on its state-of-the-art leisure precinct, which will provide new facilities including a heated swimming pool and gymnasium.

The surrounding area offers excellent public transport and a range of recreation options with parks, swimming pools, a cinema, golf course and several shopping centre just minutes away, as well as a range of dining options and community services.

“Our focus is on excelling in everything we do within the retirement and aged care sector, and so we’re genuinely delighted to have been recognised with this award,” Mr Francis said.

“We take great pride in the facilities and services that we offer, and it’s testament to the high-calibre team that we have here at SwanCare, in addition to our highly valued architects and builders, who deserve recognition for this award.”

The development was built by BGC Construction.
