The Catholic Diocese of Wollongong’s Cross+Gen program has been recognised with the 2025 Award for Innovation and Contribution from the Australian Institute for Intergenerational Practice (AIIP) at its annual conference on Friday.
Recognised for fostering meaningful connections between generations, the award celebrates initiatives that promote inclusivity and stronger community ties.
A collaborative effort between CatholicCare, Catholic Education, and local Catholic parishes, Cross+Gen pairs high school students with older community members, bridging the digital divide while offering young people a chance to engage in meaningful outreach.
Since its launch in 2021, the program has expanded from one school and three parishes to four schools and 15 parishes across the Illawarra, Macarthur, and Shoalhaven regions. Hosted in schools, the interactive sessions often feature hospitality students providing refreshments, further strengthening community connections.
“Cross+Gen is a powerful testament to how intergenerational programs can enrich lives and strengthen relationships. It highlights the vital role of our Pastoral Works in serving and uplifting people across all stages of life.”
Bishop Brian Mascord, Bishop of Wollongong.
Evaluation data highlights improved digital confidence among seniors, increased social interaction, and enhanced student leadership and empathy skills. Participants have coined the term “the hum” to describe the lively, engaged atmosphere that fills each session.
The AIIP annual conference, held in Surry Hills from 21 to 22 February 2025, brought together researchers and practitioners to explore the power of intergenerational connections in building thriving communities.
