Catholic Health Australia (CHA) has announced the appointment of Dr Katharine Bassett as its new Director of Health Policy.

Dr Bassett brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served nearly three years at the Australian Medical Association (AMA), most recently as Manager of Research and Reform. Her previous positions at consultancy firm KPMG involved collaboration with federal, state, and territory governments across the health, ageing, and social services sectors.

In response to the appointment, Catholic Health Australia Chief Executive Jason Kara said, “We are thrilled to have Katharine join us at a critical time for healthcare in Australia.”

“Like the AMA, CHA has a long history of health policy development and reform, and we look forward to her working on behalf of our members to achieve better health outcomes for all Australians.”

Dr Bassett’s responsibilities will include advocating for improved health outcomes for all Australians, ensuring the viability of hospitals, enhancing patient benefits from private health insurance, and establishing a more sustainable private hospital system.

Dr Bassett holds a PhD in clinical immunology and a Bachelor of Medical Science from the Australian National University. She is set to commence her new role on April 30.
