The government is inviting public input on the design of a national registration scheme aimed at supporting personal care workers employed in aged care. The proposed scheme will introduce new training and mandatory minimum qualification requirements to enhance workforce standards.
This initiative seeks to strengthen the aged care workforce by ensuring personal care workers receive greater recognition for their crucial roles, improved professional development opportunities, and better working conditions. Additionally, the scheme will help safeguard older people by implementing appropriate protections within aged care settings.
“Noting the significant cross-over in service provision between aged care, disability support and veterans’ care, it is also important to consider how a national scheme could be harmonised across the care and support economy.”
Anika Wells, Aged Care Minister
Older individuals, their families, advocates, care providers, aged care workers, and training organisations are encouraged to participate by completing a short survey or submitting written feedback via email.
This consultation builds upon the Albanese Government’s introduction of the Code of Conduct for Aged Care, which took effect on 1 December 2022. Compliance with the code is designed to uphold safe, respectful, and high-quality care for older Australians.
The consultation period runs from 18 February to 17 April 2025.
