IRT announces plans to revamp historic Diment seniors’ living complex in Wollongong

Diment, Wollongong, South Coast NSW

IRT has announced plans to transform its original Wollongong seniors’ living complex, built over 50 years ago, in a major refurbishment aimed at breathing new life into the community.

Named in honour of Dr Max Diment, a founding figure of IRT, the updated development will continue his vision of providing a safe, connected, and welcoming housing option for older Australians.

IRT CEO Patrick Reid shared that the new project, to be known simply as “Diment,” will include a complete refurbishment of all 104 independent living units and additional open communal spaces.

“The upgrade will see the entire community come alive with a vibrant new look while continuing to honour Dr Diment’s legacy,” Reid said.

“We’re extremely proud to carry forward his mission, expanding independent living options in a safe, secure, and convenient setting.”

The planned transformation preserves the iconic tower of the original complex, with a refreshed façade and significant internal upgrades. Lower-level adjoining buildings will also be modernised, complemented by enhanced gardens, communal spaces, and accessible walkways.

IRT’s final design has been submitted to Wollongong City Council for assessment, following extensive consultation with residents, staff, and the broader community.

“We believe our design meets the needs and expectations of the community, and we look forward to the Council’s review,” Reid added.

Current residents will remain at Diment throughout the renovations, gaining access to improved units and communal facilities upon project completion. Pending Council approval, IRT anticipates construction to commence in early 2025.
