Mercy Health’s Centennial Celebration: A Century of Service by the Sisters of Mercy in Young, NSW

Celebrations in Young, NSW last Thursday November 16, 2023, to commemorate the Sisters of Mercy and the support they have provided to the community.

Mercy Health is commemorating a century of service by the Sisters of Mercy in the local community of Young, NSW, with a month-long celebration in November 2023.

The Sisters of Mercy laid the foundation for Mercy Health in 1923, managing Mount St Joseph’s Home (now Mercy Place Young) and Sacred Heart Hospital (now Mercy Hospital) in Young.

Celebrating this historic milestone, Group Chief Executive Officer Angela Nolan paid tribute to the Sisters of Mercy whose legacy lives on within Mercy Health and all its services nationwide.

“For the past 100 years, the Sisters of Mercy have selflessly served the people of Young with hospitality and compassion. It is both heartening and honourable to sustain their legacy by providing the highest quality of care to the communities we serve,” said Ms Nolan.

Sister Theresa Foley, who joined the Mercy Order in 1962, highlighted the transformative journey of Mercy Health, witnessing its growth into a dedicated health service.

“When I first started my training as a professed Sister of Mercy, I was privileged to be able to stand alongside another Sister and five other trainee nurses,” said Sister Foley.

“In my beginning years, I watched many renovations take place and saw firsthand how Mercy Health grew into the dedicated health service it is today”.

The Sisters of Mercy’s legacy lives on through the committed staff of Mercy Health. The celebration not only marks a historic milestone but also recognises the enduring impact of the Sisters of Mercy on healthcare in the region and across the country.
