Respect has commenced a $7.12 million refurbishment of Hudson House in Cooma, marking a significant investment in modernising aged care infrastructure across the Snowy Monaro region.
The project’s first stage, backed by $5 million in Commonwealth Government funding, will transform shared accommodation into private rooms with en-suites, improved comfort, dignity and contemporary living standards for residents.
In addition to upgraded rooms, the redevelopment will introduce a new wellbeing office, a purpose-built hair salon, and enhancements to the central courtyard to create more accessible and functional outdoor spaces.
Construction on Stage 1 began in February 2026 and is being delivered in two phases to minimise disruption to residents and ensure continuity of care. The works are expected to take between seven and eight months to complete, subject to weather conditions, with completion anticipated by the end of the year.
A second stage of the redevelopment will further expand capacity, increasing the number of aged care beds available to meet growing demand in the region.
Respect CEO and Managing Director Jason Binder said the project reflects the organisation’s long-term commitment to regional communities.
“Hudson House has a long and proud history of serving the Cooma district,” Mr Binder said. “This redevelopment ensures the home continues to meet modern expectations for comfort, privacy and wellbeing, while supporting the long-term needs of older people in the Snowy Monaro region.”
Hudson House, originally established as the Sir William Hudson Memorial Centre in 1982, was founded following a major community-led effort by the Cooma District Nursing Home Association. The facility joined Respect in 2023 as part of a broader strategy to modernise aged care services across regional Australia.
