Anglicare Southern Queensland has officially opened a new $2.6 million Specialist Dementia Care Program (SDCP) unit at its Abri Residential Aged Care Home in Southport, marking a significant step forward in care for people with severe dementia-related symptoms.

Funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care, the unit is the first of its kind on the Gold Coast and will provide tailored support to eight residents living with complex behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. The opening was celebrated with residents, families, staff, and special guests including Anglicare Southern Queensland CEO Sue Cooke and Archbishop of Brisbane, The Most Reverend Jeremy Greaves.

“This unit delivers a high level of care for individuals who can’t be effectively supported in mainstream aged care,” said Ms Cooke. “It offers a safe and supportive environment where dignity, respect and personalised care are central.”

With dementia numbers projected to nearly double by 2054, Anglicare says the need for specialised dementia services is growing rapidly. The SDCP model provides transitional, short-term care – typically for 6 to 12 months – with the goal of stabilising symptoms so residents can return to mainstream care settings.

Clinical Director of Gold Coast Health’s aged care services, Dr Ben Chen, welcomed the collaboration between the SDCP and local health providers, saying it will reduce hospital admissions and strengthen aged care capabilities. “This unit brings additional beds, resources, and expert support to meet a critical need in our region,” he said.

The new facility complements Anglicare’s flagship SDCP at St Martin’s and comes ahead of two further units planned for Manly and Toowoomba, backed by an additional $5.2 million in federal funding.
