For over a decade, Curtis Reddell has been a driving force at Brightwater Care Group, exemplifying a unique blend of compassion, strategic thinking, and innovation in aged care. Starting as an Occupational Therapist, Curtis steadily rose through the ranks, taking on critical project management roles before becoming General Manager of Residential in October 2023. Today, he oversees care for 750 clients, manages a workforce of over 1,000 staff, and is responsible for a $110 million revenue budget.

Curtis’ career trajectory is defined by his commitment to improving aged care services, delivering measurable results, and empowering staff and residents alike. Over the past three years, his leadership has transformed Brightwater’s Residential Aged Care (RAC) operations, steering the organisation through significant challenges and laying the groundwork for long-term sustainability.

Financial recovery and operational excellence

One of Curtis’ most notable achievements is the financial turnaround of Brightwater’s RAC services. In FY23, RAC faced a $13.4 million deficit. Under Curtis’ stewardship, this was converted into a $2 million operational surplus by FY24. He achieved this by strategically decommissioning three unviable aged care sites, an emotionally and operationally complex process he led with empathy and precision. Every resident was successfully rehomed, and the transition was managed with minimal complaints, reflecting Curtis’ commitment to maintaining high care standards.

Curtis implemented a Centralised Rostering Service to optimise workforce efficiency, addressing inefficiencies in the previous decentralised system. This initiative reduced agency staff costs by $3.8 million, improved care continuity, and provided staff with more flexible work options across multiple sites.

Delivering on major projects

Curtis played a pivotal role in commissioning Brightwater Inglewood (Western Australia), a $52 million, 128-bed aged care facility and corporate office. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, including material shortages and lockdown disruptions, Curtis ensured the project was delivered on time and within budget. His meticulous planning and clear communication enabled a smooth transition for residents and staff, marking a major milestone for Brightwater.

A focus on people and innovation

Beyond operational achievements, Curtis is deeply committed to creating a supportive environment for staff and residents. Under his leadership, staff turnover has reduced by 4%, thanks to initiatives like a centralised after-hours clinical support model that prioritises work-life balance. Curtis has also championed brain health principles, recognising the importance of addressing neurological conditions in aged care.

Curtis is one of the most outstanding young leaders I have met. He consistently demonstrates respect and focuses on achieving positive outcomes.

His strategic insights and dedication have earned him respect from peers and colleagues alike, with many recognising him as a transformative leader. Editor: A key component of the judging criteria is based on two testimonials; from both a manager of the person being nominated and someone external to the organisation who has had regular dealings with the nominee.

Curtis Reddell’s journey is a testament to the power of innovative thinking and compassionate leadership. His ability to navigate complex challenges while prioritising the well-being of clients and staff demonstrates his commitment to reshaping aged care for the better.
