End-of-life care app helps build support for families in need

A free app developed by La Trobe University is helping Australians manage end-of-life care through the formation of supportive networks. Since its launch in 2024, the Healthy End-of-Life Planning (HELP) app has supported more than 1,100 users, including its founder, Dr Andrea Grindrod.

Developed by Dr Grindrod, Director of La Trobe’s Public Health Palliative Care Unit, the app is based on years of research and was designed to help people coordinate practical and emotional support during life-limiting illness. The app’s model is now recognised in Palliative Care Australia’s National Standards.

Users create a circle of care by listing tasks they need help with, such as transport, meals, dog walking or social visits, which they can then invite those in their circle to help with.

Dr Grindrod used the app herself after her husband Greg was diagnosed with stage four cancer. The video below shares some of their journey…

La Trobe’s work in end-of-life care is part of a broader $170 million investment in health innovation and includes the new Care Economy Cooperative Research Centre, a $129 million partnership focused on care technology and workforce solutions.

The app is funded by The Wicking Trust in partnership with Palliative Care Australia.
