End-of-year CEO Q&As: Jason Kara – Catholic Health Australia

Jason Kara, CEO of Catholic Health Australia

Our annual end-of-year Q&A series offers leaders and influencers in aged care the chance to share their views and expectations for the year ahead. Submissions can be sent to news@insideageing.com.au

What were your highlights for 2024?

The passing of the Aged Care Act was a significant highlight, bringing critical funding and regulatory reform to support a high-quality and sustainable aged care sector. The genuine collaborative approach taken by all sector stakeholders, alongside the government and opposition, was instrumental in ensuring the progress of this reform. This scale of reform will only succeed if we can look beyond our immediate vested interests.

What are you most looking forward to in 2025?

I am looking forward to taking a short break over Christmas to recover from a busy year. Beyond that, I’m excited to work closely with the government and sector stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the reforms. I also aim to explore additional ways to address the persistent challenges in our sector, such as the funding of rural and remote services and tackling older persons’ homelessness. I also want to collaborate on new models of care that address supply gaps for an ageing – and changing – population.

What books will you be reading over the summer holiday break?

I read so much for work that I intend to not engage with any non-fiction reading over the holidays at all! A couple of holidays ago I started the Expanse series by James Corey – maybe this is the time I get to finish it? I am also a big listener of podcasts. There is one called “Fall of Civilisations” which I love and its latest episode is on the fall of the Mongol empire which I know nothing about. It’s over six hours of solid history!

Our end-of-year Q&A series is supported by Altura Learning, dedicated to helping Australian aged care providers enhance workforce skills and drive business growth.
