LenexaCARE® pressure injury prevention solution trials in Canberra

LenexaCARE®

Lenexa Medical, in partnership with the University of Canberra (UC), has launched advanced trials of its innovative pressure injury prevention solution, LenexaCARE®, at an aged care facility in the ACT. This study builds on the success of earlier trials conducted at Bendigo Hospital in 2022, aiming to provide further clinical evidence of the system’s effectiveness in reducing pressure injuries.

This cutting-edge technology aligns with recent recommendations from the Aged Care Royal Commission, emphasising the importance of innovation, continuous improvement, and contemporary best practices in aged care to enhance residents’ health, safety, and wellbeing.

LenexaCARE® has been adopted in aged care facilities across Australia and Asia since 2023. It was awarded Highly Commended in the 2022 Future of Ageing Awards run by this publication.

The current trials will explore its ability to reduce pressure injury rates, improve staff workflow, and enhance the timeliness and effectiveness of resident repositioning.

The system features a high-tech, fabric-based sensor that integrates seamlessly with any mattress, offering real-time monitoring of residents. A remote dashboard provides personalised data and alerts, enabling caregivers to intervene precisely when needed. It also aids in planning and optimising turn schedules to ensure effective repositioning.

Pressure injuries remain a serious and often preventable complication in aged care, particularly for immobile residents. These injuries develop under the skin, usually unnoticed until they become severe, leading to significant pain, life-threatening complications, or even death. In Australia, pressure injuries cost the healthcare system over $9 billion annually, with aged care residents being among the most vulnerable.

“The project will provide valuable information from staff perspectives about how the system drives clinical decision making and optimises patient care.”

Associate Professor Ash Smyth from the UC Centre for Ageing Research and Translation

As pressure injuries remain a key indicator of quality care, LenexaCARE® offers a promising solution to address this widespread issue, paving the way for improved outcomes in aged care and healthcare facilities.
