Resthaven has officially opened the doors to its $36 million major redevelopment at Bellevue Heights, marking a significant milestone for the aged care provider during its 90th anniversary year.
In a ceremony held on Tuesday afternoon, the upgraded site was unveiled by Manager Residential Services Jessica Margrate and Board Member Rev Dr Graham Vawser, joined by CEO Darren Birbeck, the Executive and Board team, and a distinguished guest list including Federal MP Louise Miller-Frost, State MP Catherine Hutchesson, Mitcham Mayor Dr Heather Holmes-Ross, and leaders from fellow aged care organisations.
The redevelopment is the culmination of five years of planning and construction, with the first sod turned in 2021 amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The revitalised facility, originally built in the late 1970s, is now home to approximately 100 residents and features a range of modern improvements designed to enhance quality of life and care.
Key upgrades include the replacement of 32 residential rooms, a fully renovated auditorium for activities and events, a new kitchen, laundry, and maintenance area, and enhanced street appeal. The project represents a new era for the Bellevue Heights community, aligning with Resthaven’s long-standing commitment to aged care excellence.
“This redevelopment represents not just an investment in infrastructure, but in people, our residents, staff, and our future.”

Attendees were welcomed with live music, canapés, and 1920s-inspired decorations made by residents, capturing a celebratory “Gatsby” theme. A spirited Welcome to Country by Uncle Allen set the tone for the afternoon, followed by speeches from Darren Birbeck and Executive Manager David Norton.
