As Australia faces a looming aged care workforce shortage of at least 110,000 direct care workers over the next decade, supporting older Australians to safely remain in their homes is becoming increasingly critical. Wesley Mission Queensland’s Home Assist Secure (HAS) program is stepping up to meet this need, providing affordable home modifications and maintenance to help older people and those with disabilities maintain their independence.
Based in Petrie, Brisbane, the HAS team has been a cornerstone of the community for over 30 years, assisting more than 2,000 clients in the past year alone. The service offers subsidised home modifications ranging from minor repairs to custom-built ramps, rails, and bathroom adjustments, making essential changes accessible to those in need. Senior Coordinator Amanda Lyon emphasises the importance of these modifications, “Often, small changes like installing a ramp or modifying a bathroom can have a significant impact on a person’s independence and quality of life,” she said.
One such client is Dee Wilson, 76, who struggled to access her backyard after breaking her ankle. Within three weeks, the HAS team installed a custom ramp, restoring her independence. “Before the HAS team helped me, I was very frustrated,” Ms Wilson said.
With demand surging and bookings now extending up to two months in advance, HAS remains a vital service for older Australians looking to age safely at home.
