The Belong Club, launched in 2021 by Proveda (formerly Community Care Northern Beaches (CCNB)), is a vital community initiative aimed at reducing social isolation and loneliness to enhance seniors’ mental health and well-being. Specialising in aged care, disability, and mental health services, Proveda identified an urgent need for connection and support, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially launched with online events during lockdowns, the program has since expanded to include both virtual and in-person activities.
The Belong Club fosters social engagement, friendships, and improved physical and mental health by offering a diverse calendar of free events, including book clubs, games, walking groups, educational workshops, and coffee catch-ups. With support from the Northern Beaches Council and local businesses, the initiative has seen significant growth and impact, empowering seniors to stay active and connected within their communities.
How it came about
The Belong Club originated from a concern over the increasing social isolation among older adults, a challenge magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a not-for-profit organisation with over 30 years of experience, Proveda identified the mental health struggles faced by elderly individuals, particularly in the Northern Sydney area.
Through customer interactions, community feedback, and collaboration with the Northern Beaches Council, Proveda gathered data confirming the widespread issue of loneliness. This evidence highlighted the urgent need for targeted interventions to foster connection and support among seniors.
By offering a flexible, community-driven approach to social engagement, the Belong Club has been able to continuously adapt and provide meaningful opportunities for connection, combatting isolation effectively.
