WA Premier Roger Cook has announced a sweeping cabinet reshuffle, appointing first-time minister Meredith Hammat to the health portfolio. The move is part of broader changes that introduce new portfolios and assign dedicated ministers for each of Western Australia’s regions.
Former Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson will transition to lead the portfolios of Energy and Decarbonisation, Manufacturing and Skills, and TAFE. Meanwhile, Housing Minister John Carey will take on the newly created Health Infrastructure portfolio, which Premier Cook said would “drive the delivery of new capacity in our health system.”
In response to concerns about Ms Hammat stepping directly into the critical health portfolio, Mr Cook defended the decision, emphasising a “team-like approach” to health management. This approach includes Simone McGurk assuming responsibility for Seniors and Aged Care, while Sabine Winton will oversee Preventative Health.
“This restructure ensures a broader, system-wide approach with multiple leaders focusing on different aspects of healthcare, allowing for better investments and strategic decision-making,” Premier Cook said.
Additionally, John Carey will relinquish his responsibility for homelessness, which shifts to newly appointed minister Matthew Swinbourn. Swinbourn will also manage Environment and Community Services.
Ageing Australia welcomes new Cabinet Appointments
Following the cabinet announcement, Ageing Australia extended its congratulations to the WA Government on its recent re-election and reshuffle.
“We look forward to continuing our collaborative work with the newly appointed ministers to ensure the health and wellbeing of older Western Australians remain a top priority,” said Ageing Australia Western Australia Manager Liz Behjat.
Ageing Australia particularly welcomed the creation of a dedicated Ministry for Aged Care and Seniors, with Hon Simone McGurk taking on this role.
“These announcements follow the groundbreaking $140 million funding commitment to aged care for new and innovative projects made by the government during the recent election campaign.”
