$900 million for rural, remote and specialist aged care

The Albanese Government has committed $900 million to ensure that older Australians can access safe and quality aged care services, regardless of location. This funding forms part of a broader $5.6 billion aged care reform package announced on 12 September 2024.

A significant $600 million will be allocated to the Support at Home program, with an additional $300 million directed toward infrastructure funding to assist providers in thin markets, particularly in rural or remote areas.

Eligible Support at Home providers will have access to a 2-year thin market grant starting from 1 July 2025. These grants aim to ensure financial viability and service continuity for providers operating in areas with limited resources, including those serving individuals from diverse backgrounds and life experiences.

“The $900 million in funding that we are delivering from 1 July 2025 will support aged care providers to operate in areas that need it most, and to deliver care for some of our nation’s most vulnerable people into the future.”

Aged Care Minister Anika Wells

The extra $300 million in infrastructure funding will be distributed through the Aged Care Capital Assistance Program (ACCAP). This funding will help improve aged care facilities and build new contemporary homes or staff accommodations in areas with limited access to quality services or workforce challenges.

These investments acknowledge the unique difficulties aged care providers face in thin markets and aim to ensure that all Australians receive quality and safe aged care services, regardless of where they live.
