Nearly 20 carers across Brisbane and the Gold Coast have already participated in Anglicare Southern Queensland’s Dementia Care Respite Program, a new initiative designed to provide vital support and relief to families and unpaid carers of people living with dementia.
The program, launched in September 2024, is part of the federal government’s $8 million Improving Respite Care for People with Dementia and Their Carers initiative. Anglicare SQ was one of just nine organisations to secure funding in the Stage 3 funding round, enabling it to offer structured support to those caring for loved ones with dementia.
Delivered over six weeks, the program features expert-led sessions covering key topics such as an Introduction to Dementia, Emotional Wellbeing for Carers, Navigating the System, Supporting a Loved One, Physical Wellbeing for Carers, and Respite Planning.
Anglicare’s Group Manager for Aged & Community Services, Sue Montgomery, said the initiative is equipping carers with the knowledge and support needed to navigate the challenges of dementia care.
We’ve seen firsthand how this program is helping carers feel more confident, informed and connected.”

Ms Montgomery added that the program is part of a broader effort to improve access to dementia-specific respite services across southeast Queensland.
The Dementia Care Respite Program continues to welcome new participants, offering a vital resource for those navigating the complexities of caring for a loved one with dementia.
