Occasionally, Inside Ageing shares a special offer from a past Future of Ageing Award winner. In this case, we have an offer from SilVR Adventures who won the Technology – Health & Wellbeing category in the 2020 Future of Ageing Awards.

Aged care is undergoing a digital transformation in how we run facilities, with virtual reality (VR) emerging as a powerful tool for enhancing meaningful engagement. SilVR Adventures, a leader in VR for older adults, has recently partnered with Medical & Aged Care Group (MACG) in Victoria, St Luke’s ElderCare (SLEC) in Singapore, and NewDirection Care in Queensland to bring personalised VR experiences to aged care residents.

Through the 360° Camera Project, families, care staff, and residents are becoming content creators—filming cherished places, family moments, and cultural celebrations—offering deeply personal and immersive experiences. This initiative helping redefine how technology strengthens family bonds, empowers care teams, and enhances social engagement.

Bringing the outside world in

For many aged care residents, stepping outside can be difficult. SilVR Adventures addresses this by transforming real-world locations into virtual experiences. Family members and care teams have begun capturing footage of childhood homes, local parks, and community festivals, allowing residents to reconnect with familiar places.

This initiative has already gained traction in Singapore, New Zealand, Queensland, and Victoria, proving that VR is not just about entertainment—it’s about fostering connections, empowerment, and inclusivity.

MACG: VR as a tool for reconnection

At MACG’s Parkdale care home in Victoria, some residents who rarely left their rooms were hesitant to explore communal spaces. MACG filmed their facility’s gardens, shared areas, and community spaces, allowing residents to experience them in VR before venturing outside in real life.

The results were remarkable:

  • Residents who had remained in their rooms for months began stepping outside.
  • 100% of participants rated the VR experience positively.
  • 100% found the VR session relaxing.
  • More than half (52%) expressed interest in sharing VR experiences with family.

“Technology should never replace human interaction – it should enhance it – This initiative shows how VR can inspire residents to reconnect with their surroundings and community.”

Colin Pudsey, Founder & CEO of SilVR Adventures.

SLEC: Reuniting families through virtual celebration

In Singapore, St Luke’s ElderCare embraced VR to help families celebrate Chinese New Year with loved ones in aged care. Families filmed traditional meal preparations, festive shopping, and family gatherings, creating deeply personal VR experiences for residents.

For resident Mdm Lim Choy Hoy, this meant seeing her husband and daughter again and reminiscing about past celebrations. Another resident, Mdm Lee Bee Huah, revisited her home through VR, sharing the experience with her best friend.

“At SLEC, we always seek ways to enhance care through innovation,” shared Jinq-Yi Lee, Manager, IT Systems (Digitalisation), St Luke’s ElderCare.

“The addition of personalised content creation to our VR program has been incredibly rewarding,” Ms Lee added.

NewDirection Care: A glimpse of home and nature

In Queensland, families and staff at NewDirection Care used 360° cameras to capture bush trails, riverside walks, and family homes. One resident, who longed for the Australian outback, reconnected with the sights and sounds of the landscape through VR, providing a deep sense of comfort and nostalgia.

A cultural shift: Empowering teams & residents

Beyond family connections, VR is fostering cultural awareness. At one aged care provider, 20% of the workforce is from Nepal. Residents took an interest in their carers’ traditions, leading the team to film Nepali cuisine, festivals, and ceremonies, using VR as a storytelling tool to bridge cultures.
