Telstra provides complimentary mobile devices to vulnerable customers ahead of 3G shutdown

SMS ‘3’ to 3498 to check if a phones needs an upgrade ahead of the 3G shutdown. The 3G network shutdown is 31 August, 2024.

Starting today, Telstra will distribute approximately 12,000 complimentary mobile devices to customers in difficult situations, including those living in rural areas and elderly individuals. This initiative aims to support customers as they transition from the soon-to-be-defunct 3G network, ensuring they remain connected after the 3G network closes on August 31.

The recipients of these devices face various challenges, such as financial hardship, recovery from natural disasters, and dependence on mobile phones for life-threatening medical conditions (categorised as ‘Priority Assistance’ customers). Many are over 80 years old and reside in remote areas, making visits to Telstra stores difficult.

“This will benefit the most vulnerable members of our community. Maintaining connections is vital in our society, whether with loved ones or essential services.”

Major Brendan Nottle of The Salvation Army

Telstra is committed to ensuring that all Australians, regardless of background or income, can participate in the digital society. While most 3G users are prepared for the transition, Telstra wants to ensure that those who need extra assistance receive it.

In the coming weeks, eligible customers will be notified about receiving a new device. They will need to follow the instructions provided to switch to the 4G network. Customers unsure about their phone’s compatibility can text ‘3’ to 3498 or contact Telstra for assistance.
