Uniting Mingaletta Residential Aged Care in Port Macquarie is seeing positive results from its trainee program with Newman Technical College, designed to encourage local students to pursue careers in aged care.

The program offers Year 11 students Mikayla Eichorn, Mia Mitcham, Nate Newton, and Penelope Sprague practical, on-the-job training to achieve a Certificate III in Aged Care. It also provides a pathway to further nursing studies and potential permanent work placements at Mingaletta.

The program, overseen by Service Manager Adrienne O’Hare and Wellness and Leisure Coordinator Tracey McInnes, has been running successfully for several years, providing valuable experience and insight into aged care work.

Ms O’Hare stresses the importance of attracting young people to the sector, particularly given recent industry challenges, and highlights that the program showcases aged care as a rewarding career path with new opportunities and increased support for staff.

“We ensure they are paired up with amazing mentors and provide them with as much support as they need to achieve everything they possibly can.”

Nate Newton, one of the trainees, shared his passion for the program, stating that he enjoys working with elderly residents and appreciates the rewarding, nurturing aspects of the job.

“I really love working with elderly people. You treat them like you would your nan or pop and being kind makes you feel good about yourself as well. The nurturing side of this job makes it really attractive as a career path and this program is the perfect way to start on that journey,” he added.
