Uniting NSW.ACT’s new Shellharbour development has taken a major step forward, with stage one of its Development Application approved by the Regional Planning Panel. The project is set to address the increasing demand for quality seniors’ housing in the region, where nearly 20,000 residents aged over 65 are expected to call Shellharbour home by 2031.
The main image in this story showcases a modern, integrated community designed to combine independent living apartments with assisted living services. The “continuity of care” model will allow residents to remain within their community as their needs change, providing both independence and access to support.
Simon Furness, Director of Property and Housing at Uniting, said the project aims to deliver more than housing: “We recognise the urgent need for high-quality seniors’ housing in Shellharbour, and Uniting Shellharbour will deliver exactly that, underlining our mission to put Australian seniors first.”
The development has been planned to foster social connection while respecting privacy, with communal spaces, landscaped gardens, and vibrant green areas designed to encourage interaction and wellbeing. Sustainability is also a focus, with energy-efficient designs tailored to the local climate.
Located near shopping centres, health services, and public transport, the community will ensure residents stay connected and maintain independence. In line with Uniting’s commitment to inclusivity, 10 per cent of independent living apartments will be set aside as affordable housing.
Once complete, the project will deliver 152 one, two, and three-bedroom apartments across four buildings, basement parking for 149 vehicles, extensive outdoor green spaces, and integrated community facilities.
Construction of stage one is expected to begin in early 2026, with completion anticipated by winter 2028, pending approvals.
