Residents from Infinite Aged Care’s Edge Hill Orchards home proved age is no barrier to celebration when they joined the Cairns Festival Grand Street Parade on 30 August – marking the first aged care float in the event’s history.
General Manager Fiona Lawson led the initiative, transforming the Cairns Party Bus into a colourful Infinite Care float emblazoned with the slogan “Never Too Old to Party”, a playful nod to this year’s festival theme, “Young at Heart.”
“I’d noticed floats from disability services and NDIS providers last year, but none from aged care,” Ms Lawson said. “I knew our residents would love being part of the fun, and what better way to challenge perceptions of aged care than by dancing in the streets?”
The Infinite Care Party Bus pumped out classic hits as residents, staff, and families danced in matching party shirts. Children joined the celebration dressed as ‘little oldies,’ sparking laughter from the crowd. With its high energy and cheeky party spirit, the float quickly became one of the evening’s highlights.
“It made me feel alive!”

The Cairns Festival, established in 1962 and delivered annually by Cairns Regional Council, is renowned for its vibrant mix of music, colour and community. Each year, the Grand Parade lights up the Esplanade with floats, performers, marching bands, giant puppets and fireworks, attracting thousands of spectators.
“The response from the crowd was incredible – so many cheers!” Ms Lawson said. “To be the first ever aged care float in the parade was truly amazing – and when ‘Sex Bomb’ started playing, I think we showed everyone a whole new side of aged care.”
By stepping into the spotlight, getting involved not only brought joy to residents but also helped reshape community perceptions, that you’re never too old to party!
