With artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly driving global efficiency, Australia’s aged care sector has faced persistent challenges caused by fragmented and siloed care management systems. These systems hinder effective data sharing across aged and home care providers, hospitals, and related services, limiting the transformative potential of AI and creating inefficiencies in care delivery.
Mirus Australia responded to this challenge by launching the Careverse – the first sector-wide aggregated clinical dataset. Developed in partnership with leading research institutions and technology firms, the Careverse introduces a unified data model that enables seamless integration and analysis of clinical data to improve outcomes, operational efficiency, and sector-wide conformance to aged care reforms.
Why it came about
The initiative emerged from industry feedback highlighting widespread inefficiencies, missed opportunities in care delivery, and the urgent need for better integration. Consultations with providers, clinicians, and families confirmed the necessity of a standardised system.
Three foundational use cases were developed:
- Funding acceleration: Identified with the Department of Health and Aged Care to fast-track assessments and payments for residents experiencing rapid health deterioration.
- Early clinical intervention: Partnered with providers to instantly identify clinical decline and recommend early interventions.
- Real-time quality monitoring: AI models were trained to assess conformance with aged care quality standards, supporting continuous improvement.
“Broad reaching benefits for a variety of stakeholders who were involved in the design.”

How it works
The Careverse unifies data from disparate systems (e LeeCare, iCare, eCase, PCS, Alayacare, AutumnCare, Procura, BestMed, SARAH and ManAd) into a single model, enabling:
- Seamless interoperability
- Predictive analytics
- Real-time decision support
- Automation of administrative tasks
Objectives
- Unify data: Consolidate clinical data into a central, comprehensible source.
- Enhance interoperability : Share data across the entire health ecosystem.
- Leverage AI: Drive insights, improve care, and streamline operations.
- Boost productivity: Reduce time on non-care tasks, reallocating resources to direct care.
Stakeholder engagement
- Consulted with 50+ aged care providers, 30+ healthcare professionals, and 25+ families/residents.
- Technology partners included InterSystems, CSIRO, Digital Health CRC, Sparked HL7, and the Department of Health and Aged Care.
Implementation
- Design & development: Collaborative design, prototyping, and rigorous testing.
- Pilot testing: Conducted in live aged care facilities with feedback loops.
- Deployment: Full-scale rollout with system integration support.
- Ongoing evaluation: Dedicated team monitors system performance and user feedback.
Sustainability (a key criterion of the awards)
- Cost-effectiveness: Automates workflows, reduces manual processing, and improves staff efficiency.
- Environmental benefits: Minimises paper use and travel for audits.
- Scalability: Modular design enables rapid deployment across regions.
Project leadership
- Mirus Australia Leads: Robert Covino (Innovation & Technology), Andrew Farmer (CEO), Katie Airey (Clinical Advisor), Tyler Fisher (Data Scientist), Alejandro Moran (AI Engineering), Luke Coe (CTO), Khanh Nguyen (Data Architect), and Stacey Swinton (Industry Specialist).
- External partners: InterSystems, CSIRO, ARIIA, Digital Health CRC, Sparked HL7, and aged care providers including Alino Living, MercyCare, and Autumn Aged Care.
Evidence of success
- Award Recognition: Winner of the 2024 InterSystems Global Healthcare Impact Award (over 1,000 entries).
- Healthcare improvements: Unified data improved clinical decisions and provided predictive care insights.
- Productivity gains: Automation reduced admin time; AI forecasts AN-ACC classifications across organisations in minutes.
- Cost savings: Operational efficiencies lowered costs and improved resource management.
The Careverse represents a transformative step forward for Australian aged care. Through leadership, innovation, and collaboration, it sets a new benchmark for quality care, operational resilience, and regulatory compliance.
